  • 3-year Head of Department appointment is underpinned by an ongoing Professor or Associate Professor role

About You

As Head of Department, you will provide academic and strategic leadership to enable the delivery of the research, learning and teaching strategies for the School. The role will lead, manage and develop academic staff within the Department, and drive an outstanding experience for our students.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was formed in April 2024, and is one of six new departments designed to deliver a new strategic vision for the School of Engineering. The new Department sees the disciplines of Electrical and Electronic Engineering reunited at RMIT. This role will see you lead a reconnection our respective academic teams and exploit the obvious synergies in our research and teaching portfolios.

The strategic plans for the School will see additional budgetary control and decision-making transfer into each Department. This is designed to provide Departments with more autonomy and enable them to make local decisions, as well as enhance innovation in teaching and research activities. This will place an emphasis on Heads of Departments' planning areas for investment and delivery against agreed KPIs.

To be successful for this position, you will have:

  • Proven strong academic leadership and management experiences and skills with the capability & capacity to deliver strategic objectives.
  • Established research record in a relevant discipline, with demonstrated capacity to lead and promote excellence in research.
  • Proven record of innovative teaching in a discipline relevant to this School underpinned by an understanding of contemporary Learning and Teaching theory.
  • Knowledge and in-depth understanding of relevant industry priorities.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to communicate, build and foster relationships internally and externally.
  • Ability to foster a culture of positive change and to think strategically about organisational priorities and to negotiate agreed directions and outcomes.

Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD combined with knowledge and achievements that meet the professorial criteria.

About the Department

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is one of six departments that together form one of the largest engineering schools in the country. The Department has 36 full time members of staff and teaches across a multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programs, ensuring strong and growing student numbers. Over the past 10 years, research in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at RMIT has also grown significantly, so that it is now has the largest research income in the School. Electrical and Electronic Engineering also has an ERA ranking of 5 and is ranked 135 in the world by the 2024 QS University rankings.

The Department hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS), a node for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS), as well as the ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors and the Electric Vehicle (EV) Living Laboratory funded by the Victorian state government. The Department also hosts the Micro Nano Research Facility (MNRF), which has state of the art capabilities to design, model, fabricate and package micro and nano scale devices, along with many other facilities and laboratories such as the Integrated Photonics and Applications Centre.

The School is looking to appoint a new Head of Department to deliver a bold strategic vision for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which will be supported by investment from the School and STEM College as we continue to grow a vital research and educational strength for RMIT.
