About the opportunity

The School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health is one of the most research-intensive Schools in the University. The school produces high-impact research that addresses the most important global health issues. The school was formed in 2001 to initially bring together the disciplines of pathology, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and histology and subsequently the discipline of biomedical science. In 2021 the school underwent a major reform to reorganise teaching and research into a more contemporary model. The mission of the school is to create Leaders in medical science education and research.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Professor (Level E) for the School of Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine and Health in the area of sleep biology and mental health. The position will drive innovation in research and teaching in the school and play a significant role in, and make a significant contribution to the Neurosciences theme and the School in general. The successful candidate will join the school's esteemed faculty and contribute to the commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in the fields of sleep biology and mental health.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an independent and innovative research program focused on sleep biology, and their impact on human health, with mental health as a particular focus. The candidate will also be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and provide mentorships to students.

The position reports to The Head of School, Professor Mary Collins. The position ensures compliance with work health safety standards, and all University policies.

About you

The successful candidate will:

• hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as psychology, sleep biology, neuroscience, or a related discipline.
• demonstrate a passion for teaching, a record of excellence in mentoring, and possess excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
• have experience in the development of novel technologies for circadian and sleep science
• have a strong record of scholarly productivity, including publications in leading scientific journals, and the ability to secure external funding
• have a strong track record of disseminating their research to the broader community through public outreach, including broadcast and social media
• demonstrate commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and service.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a continuing position on a full-time basis, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
